What happens when it is not?
What happens when the financial cost of using AI becomes so high that we can no longer afford to ask it everything? In that future, the advantage will belong to those who know when to use AI, when not to, and how to think before they prompt.
AI may feel effortless to the user, but the systems behind it are becoming increasingly expensive and resource-intensive to build and maintain. A future in which we are forced to be more intentional about when, how and why we use AI is not difficult to imagine.
In that world, asking better questions will matter. Thinking before prompting will matter. And those who have developed creative thinking will have a clear advantage.
This matters because today’s professional and educational environments are increasingly saturated with the promise of AI. Individuals are encouraged to use it. Organizations are encouraged to adopt it. Companies are told that AI will improve productivity, reduce costs, streamline operations and, in some cases, reduce the need for human labour. Yet this enthusiasm can obscure a more important question: not whether AI can produce outputs, but whether people can think well enough to use those outputs responsibly.
As artificial intelligence becomes embedded in professional, educational and social life, creativity is being repositioned from a desirable personal quality to a core intellectual competency. The question is no longer whether AI can produce ideas. It can. The more important question is whether individuals and organizations can frame problems well, evaluate possibilities critically and apply ideas with judgment, originality and purpose.
This is precisely why creative thinking remains essential. In an environment where generative AI can produce rapid responses, the human contribution shifts toward problem framing, interpretation, discernment and contextual decision-making. AI can accelerate ideation, but it does not remove the need for intellectual flexibility. In fact, it may increase the importance of knowing how to think across multiple dimensions before turning to technology for support.
Whole brain thinking is especially relevant in this context because it challenges the narrow view that creativity belongs only to the imaginative or artistic domain. Convergent thinking then becomes the necessary counterpart: the disciplined process of selecting, testing and refining ideas. AI can support both processes, but it cannot replace the judgment required to move between them responsibly.
A professional using AI to solve a workplace problem may receive ten plausible suggestions within seconds. Yet the value does not lie in the quantity of ideas produced. The value lies in the person’s ability to recognize which ideas are relevant, ethical, feasible and aligned with human needs. Without that evaluative capacity, AI-generated output risks becoming superficial, generic or disconnected from context.
The central educational question, then, is not simply how we teach people to use AI, but how we teach them to think before they use it. For much of modern history, intellectual advantage was tied to access: who could find information, who had the right sources, and who could gather knowledge efficiently. Today, the challenge has shifted. Information is abundant, ideas can be generated instantly, and volume itself has little meaning. The real skill lies in paring down, making distinctions, recognizing quality, and choosing with intention. In this context, discernment becomes a form of creativity. The ability to move from many possible answers to the most meaningful one requires judgment, taste, ethics, context and purpose. Creative thinking, therefore, is not only about producing more ideas; it is about knowing which ideas deserve attention.
This is where creative thinking becomes not only a cognitive skill, but also a professional responsibility. The ability to ask better questions, challenge assumptions, synthesize perspectives and move between exploration and evaluation is increasingly important in a world shaped by automation. Creativity is no longer separate from technological literacy. It is part of what makes technological literacy meaningful.
