Writing with Generative AI: Enhancement or Replacement?
Speaker: Ben Taylor , Academic Skills Program Coordinator
Writing and Academic Skills, Student Success Centre
Over the past two years, generative artificial intelligence (genAI) technology has fundamentally changed the way we think about and produce writing. Framed by Risko and Gilbert’s (2016) definition of cognitive offloading, this presentation will introduce ways in which instructors might thoughtfully and intentionally incorporate genAI usage into students’ achievement of intended course/program learning outcomes. I will provide some practical examples of tasks students might use genAI to complete, emphasizing the potential risks and benefits to their learning. Ultimately, I hope this presentation will help instructors to identify, with respect to various writing contexts, whether genAI is more likely to enhance or replace the learning process in their courses.
