Generally associated with modern pop styles, electronic music has a fascinating history that dates back more than 100 years. Manufacturers introduced the first generation of instruments in the 1920s and 1930s. By the time magnetic audio tape landed in the 1940s, electronic music had become a mainstay of the avant garde. This course spans a century of experimentation, niche appeal and ultimately broad acceptance. From 1940s electroacoustic tape music to 1980s new wave, turn-of-the-century rave culture and beyond. Electronic music has gone from arcane academic exercise to the world’s largest concert halls.
