Today, the humanities can serve as an important antidote to the complex world we live in. Amidst political and social turmoil, carefully crafted and judiciously selected words that explore the human experience can be soothing to the soul and stimulating to the mind. Poetry is a literary genre that provokes emotional response and offers insights into the human experience in ways unlike its narrative counterparts. At the same time, our appreciation of poetry can be limited because we do not have the tools we need to engage and explore poetry in meaningful ways. In this course, you will acquire skills that will demystify the poetic experience. You will engage with poems that stoke an emotional response and achieve effect through the musicality of the poetic line. Finally, you will hone your understanding of poetic design and devices such that you will discover the power and possibility of poetry in our noisy times

Rick Carter is a retired secondary school teacher of English and Dramatic Arts. Rick spent his career with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board in Sudbury, Ontario where he served as a classroom teacher, department chair, and principal. He is also a published poet, having completed a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Rick has published The Bright There, There, a collection of poems, and White Space, a collection of haiku and senryu. He also publishes regularly in Frogpond: The Journal of the Haiku Society of America.
