Meet Karan Chrysler: Adapting and Growing in a Post-Pandemic World

Karan Chrysler’s career journey demonstrates the value of adaptability and lifelong learning. With over two decades of experience in conference coordination, Karan transitioned from organizing events at the Art Gallery of Ontario to joining the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) in 2004. At PHRI, Karan embraced the new and evolving field of clinical trial research, becoming a vital part of the organization. However, as the global pandemic began to disrupt in-person meetings and travel, she recognized an opportunity to pivot her career and expand her skill set, leading her to pursue continuing education in Applied Clinical Research.
Before joining the Applied Clinical Research program, Karan had an extensive career managing conferences for PHRI, but as the pandemic began to disrupt in-person meetings and travel, she decided it was time to pivot and expand her skillset.
Program Experience
Karan’s journey to McMaster Continuing Education began through her workplace’s Educational Department. She was drawn to McMaster Continuing Education’s online learning format, allowing her to balance her demanding full-time job with coursework during evenings and weekends at her own discretion.
“My favourite course so far was ACR 102: Research Ethics, which covered the history of research trials and the development of regulatory laws both in Canada and internationally. I found this particularly enlightening.”
The Applied Clinical Research program has not only expanded her knowledge but also allowed her to transition into the role of a Research Project Coordinator, where she now assists with various studies within her department.
Achievements and Skills
Through this program, Karan has gained a comprehensive understanding of research project office operations, regulatory approval processes, and the intricate steps leading to randomization in trials. She attributes much of her success in these areas to the invaluable guidance of her instructor, Munaza Jamil, whose support made a significant impact during ACR 103: Clinical Trial Design and ACR 104: Clinical Trial Management.
“The biggest milestone for me has been the opportunity to attend school at the University level and to grow professionally into a Research Coordinator role.”
Personal Insight
Balancing full-time work and education came with its share of challenges for Karan. Managing her job responsibilities while keeping up with coursework required careful time management and dedication. Financial constraints were another hurdle, but with the support of her employer’s educational funding, Karan was able to pursue the program. Despite these obstacles, she found the Avenue to Learn platform to be a valuable tool, helping her stay organized and on track.
“As I work full-time Monday – Friday, I manage my studies by doing my reading one night every week and completing exams and assignments on weekends.”
Reflecting on her journey, Karan encourages others to embrace the challenge, noting that while it can feel overwhelming at times, the rewards are well worth the effort.
Looking Forward
With the completion of the program in sight, Karan aims to continue her career as a Research Project Coordinator and contribute to ongoing clinical studies at PHRI. She is committed to staying engaged in the evolving research field and continuing to refine her skills.
Karan’s journey through the Applied Clinical Research program exemplifies the power of lifelong learning and adaptability. Her story serves as an inspiration for others who are looking to pivot in their careers and seek personal and professional growth.
A favourite motivational quote that inspires her is: “You are never too young or too old to reinvent yourself!”
