After building a career in account management, Richard Wong wanted to take his analytical skills further and prepare for a new career in data analytics. Pursuing a Data Analytics Certificate through McMaster Continuing Education was his opportunity to build on his professional experience and prepare for his next chapter.
Before starting the program, Richard worked as a Key Account Manager, where he analyzed sales data based primarily on practical experience rather than formal training in statistics. He decided to return to learning to strengthen his analytical foundation and develop new technical skills.
“Recognizing the need to strengthen my analytical foundation, I enrolled in this program to develop the technical skills required to analyze data more effectively,” Richard says.
To apply what he was learning in a real-world setting, Richard participated in a project working alongside industry professionals. He used statistical methods, Python and R to analyze healthcare data and develop models.
“Given my previous experience in the healthcare sector, this opportunity allowed me to bridge my domain knowledge with newly acquired technical skills.”
The experience also helped Richard gain valuable teamwork and problem-solving skills, along with practical exposure to data analysis in a professional setting.
“The positive feedback and recognition I received from the project lead have strengthened my confidence as I transition into a career as a Data Analyst,” Richard says.
By combining his healthcare experience with practical data analytics training, Richard is building the skills and confidence to stay ahead and create new possibilities in his career.
