Reaching New Heights: Highlights from McMaster Continuing Education’s 2023 Graduation

On November 9th, McMaster Continuing Education proudly commemorated the successes of 780+ graduates with a virtual celebration.  

Join us as we look back at the meaningful moments of the McMaster Continuing Education 2023 Graduation Livestream Virtual Event—a celebration where university staff, instructors, family and friends welcomed and congratulated the graduating class of 2023. 

Dan Piedra, the distinguished host and Assistant Director at McMaster Continuing Education, skillfully led the graduation ceremony, featuring an insightful keynote speech, a thought-provoking fireside chat, and congratulatory videos, all to inspire and impart words of wisdom to the graduating class as they move forward in their professional and lifelong learning journey. 

The ceremony commenced with a special video message by Susan Tighe, Provost and Vice President Academic at McMaster University.  

“From the first day of class, you embarked on a path of growth, enrichment and professional transformation. You began your studies eager to learn and discover, and you leave empowered with new knowledge and skills to make an impact and create value wherever you go. As you move forward, remember that your education is not a destination but a lifelong journey,” said Tighe. 

Lorraine Carter, Director, McMaster Continuing Education, shared heartfelt congratulations with the graduates for their perseverance in balancing work, and family life alongside education.  

“As evidenced by the fact that you are graduating today, you know what hard work is and what our changing world needs more than ever: educated and thinking human beings who are willing to make a difference,” said Carter.  

Gayleen Gray, the Associate Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer at McMaster University, was this year’s keynote speaker and shared insights on the meaning of education and higher learning.  

“You have come from near and far, from within Canada and many other countries with various backgrounds and foundational educational experiences. Your diplomas and certificates are concrete evidence of your success, and you should be very proud of this milestone,” said Gray.  

In her address, Gray emphasized that the quest for knowledge and skills goes beyond individual progress; it’s a commitment to enhancing our society and the world. She highlighted the reality of our interconnected global community, stating that our actions carry profound consequences. 

“Consider what truly matters to you and what issues resonate with your heart and where your passions lie. In the pursuit of your purpose, continue to align your education and skills with these values,” she said.  

Gray had indicated that graduation is not the end but a fresh beginning. The knowledge and skills acquired through McMaster Continuing Education is a stepping stone for continuous growth.  

“It’s a timeless truth that anyone can embark on the journey of learning and self-improvement at any point in their lives,” said Gayleen. 

Tyson Dimayuga, a graduate from McMaster Continuing Education’s Business Administration program, was invited to share his inspiring story during the ceremony. 

He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Policy Administration and Law at York University. His journey to graduate school was filled with ups and downs due to being internationally educated. It was his McMaster education that helped boost his graduate school application and made his profile stand out to the selection committee.  

“My studies with McMaster Continuing Education showed the selection committee my university-level education in Canada. It was my education, work experience and passion for community that made my profile stand out from the hundreds of applications and I was granted admission,” said Dimayuga. 

Dimayuga’s advice to graduates is to not allow social and cultural barriers deter them from exploring life and career. “Keep on asking questions. Maximize your education to create solutions and inspire others to help build a better community for future generations. Seek support from people that have your best interests at heart,” said Tyson.  

The ceremony concluded with a fireside chat titled, “Navigating the Modern Workplace, Adaptability, Innovation and Inclusivity” with speakers including Kim Dej, Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning, McMaster University, Gayleen Gray, Lorraine Carter, Dan Piedra, and Tracy Gibbs, a McMaster Continuing Education Graduate and Organizational Development Consultant. 

This discussion explored the evolving nature of career paths amidst technological shifts and the importance of embracing innovation, building self-confidence and cultivating adaptability in the face of constant change.  

The speakers discussed how to adapt and thrive in an environment where new challenges and opportunities emerge regularly and what skills and mindsets are most valuable.  

Lorraine Carter highlighted that the modern career journey isn’t a straight path but rather a curvy one. The imperative for upskilling or reskilling is evident, and embracing change with an open mindset not only alleviates concerns but also unveils limitless opportunities for personal and professional growth.  

Speaking about innovation and its role in the workplace, Tracy Gibbs talked about fostering innovation as a skill set that can be developed. 

“It’s important to think about ourselves as not being static. Everybody can foster and support innovation in teams and it’s something we can further develop through learning opportunities, pursuing professional development, practicing and strengthening over time,” she shared. 

On the topic of building self-confidence and positive assertiveness at work, Kim Dej highlighted that individuals who tend to lean more introverted might be confident inside but it’s hard for other people to see that confidence because extraversion and assertiveness tend to be valued in the workplace.  

“What I recommend to folks in that position is to not dwell on what skills you don’t have or try to be someone you’re not but recognize the skills you do have and find places where you are comfortable to embrace them,” said Dej.
