Meet Karen Ann Conlon: Guiding the next generation of health information management and health informatics professionals

Karen Ann is a certified Health Information Management (HIM) professional with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), with over 17 years of healthcare experience. She holds certifications in Health Information Management from CHA Learning and Health Care Leadership and Management from McMaster University. She serves as a committee member for various healthcare organizations in northern Ontario.
Throughout her career, Karen Ann has held diverse roles in healthcare settings, including IT Support, Clinical Application Analyst and Project Coordinator. Currently, she is the Manager of Information Services/Technology, Admitting, Health Records, and Privacy Officer at Timmins and District Hospital.
Passionate about leadership in HIM, technology, and privacy, Karen Ann is committed to sharing her expertise with students of the Health Informatics and Health Information Fundamentals programs at McMaster Continuing Education.
What led you to become an instructor at McMaster Continuing Education?
My journey as an instructor with McMaster Continuing Education was driven by a deep passion for lifelong learning and a desire to help others achieve their goals. I have always found great fulfillment in sharing knowledge and guiding students as they explore new areas of interest or advance their careers in healthcare technology, health information management, and privacy. The dynamic and diverse environment of Continuing Education at McMaster offers a unique platform to connect with learners and make a meaningful positive impact on their personal and professional growth. This alignment with my values and professional aspirations has made teaching a natural and exciting path for me.
How would you describe your style of teaching?
My style of teaching is interactive, student-centered, and adaptable. I focus on creating an engaging virtual classroom where learners feel connected and motivated. By emphasizing real-world applications through case studies, industry scenarios, and practical exercises, I help students see how classroom concepts apply in practice. This not only enhances their understanding but also equips them with the skills and insights needed to tackle real-world challenges. By drawing on current examples and relevant experiences, I aim to make learning more relatable and impactful, preparing students to effectively apply their knowledge in their professional lives. Moreover, I strive to support each student’s learning journey and encourage collaboration by fostering open communication and providing timely feedback. My goal is to make the online learning experience as dynamic and effective as possible, ensuring that students not only grasp the material but also apply it in meaningful ways.
What will students learn from you in the Health Information Fundamentals and Health Informatics Diploma programs?
In these programs, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how information systems and technologies are applied in the healthcare sector. They will also gain foundational knowledge and skills crucial for managing and utilizing personal health information effectively, as well as knowledge of how information technology and data management intersect in healthcare to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
In the HTH104: Privacy, Confidentiality, Security course, students will gain a thorough understanding of managing and protecting personal health information and ensuring compliance with provincial legislation. The course equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage privacy and security effectively in healthcare settings.
The HIF105: Information Technology course will cover an overview of information technology as it applies to the field of health informatics. This course explores various aspects of project management, emerging technologies, security, interoperability, and health information systems that are crucial for managing and utilizing health information systems effectively.

Choosing between the Health Information Fundamentals Diploma and the Health Informatics Diploma programs depends on your career goals, interests, and the specific skills you wish to develop.
If you’re interested in managing and regulating personal health information and ensuring data integrity and compliance, the Health Information Fundamentals program may be a better fit.
If you’re drawn to the development and implementation of technology solutions in healthcare as well as enjoy leading projects and driving technological innovation, the Health Informatics program is likely more suitable.

What do you think your students would be most surprised to learn about you?
My students might be surprised that I’m an avid reader with a love for fiction, emerging technologies, and business trends. I find inspiration in the latest novels and innovations, which often influence my perspective in my professional career and the virtual classroom. Outside of academia, I’m a dedicated outdoor enthusiast and have a special fondness for dogs and horses. I’m always eager to explore the great outdoors and spend time with friends and family. Beyond my passion for these interests, my family and I host two hockey billets year-long for our local junior hockey team, creating a dynamic environment at home with my two children. Balancing these interests with my professional career and as a continuing education instructor keeps me inspired and brings a unique blend of creativity and practicality to my work.
