You’ve registered for your first class, now what?
Learn how to get started with McMaster Continuing Education and be ready for your first day of class.

If you are a new McMaster student, you will receive an email within 24 hours with information to activate your Mac ID after enrolling in your first course.
Please contact us if you do not receive this email in your inbox or junk mail folder within 24 hours.
Your Mac ID typically represents your last name and first initial (e.g. smithj). Please make note of your Mac ID and password, you will use this information to log into everything you need (Mosaic, Avenue to Learn, on-site WiFi, etc.).
Note: If you are a returning student but do not remember your Mac ID and/or password, please visit our Help Centre FAQs for next steps.
Not every course requires textbooks. You can view and purchase any textbooks your course may require through the Campus Store website as soon as term listings are available, which is typically a few weeks prior to the beginning of the term.
This is where you can view your grades, see a history of your courses and fees paid, print a letter of completion for tuition reimbursement, request a transcript, print your tax certificate, etc.

Course Access – Avenue to Learn (A2L) is McMaster’s online learning management system where most online (O), online self-study (OSS) and virtual classroom (VC) courses are delivered. You may want to bookmark this page.
A link for your course in A2L will be visible 1-3 days before the course start date. You will use A2L to access live VC sessions, view your course outline, assignments, contact your instructor, and more.

Note: You will need to add @mcmaster.ca to the end of your MacID username if your course requires you to login to Avenue to Learn (e.g., macid@mcmaster.ca).
There are a few courses that do not use Avenue to Learn which include Essentials courses, Crisis & Mental Health workshops, and short courses.
For these courses you will receive a pre-course email a few days in advance to provide you with a zoom link and any required pre-course work details (if applicable).
Note: Enrolling after the course start date may delay course access and does not permit exceptions to coursework due dates, late textbook purchases, or the drop/refund policies.

Examity Online Proctoring
Leader of remote test proctoring
Many course final examinations offered through McMaster Continuing Education are administered online through our partnership with Examity®, a recognized leader in remote test proctoring. Examity® provides a secure and convenient way to take your exams online.
Starting March 15, 2020, all Accounting (ACC) courses, as well as Surety (SAC) will have final examinations administered via remote live proctoring through our partnership with Examity®.
It is important to note the following systems requirements before registering in a course that uses Examity. Students must have:
- A desktop computer or laptop with Windows or Mac operating system (tablets or smartphones are not compatible)
- A webcam and microphone (built-in or external)
- A connection to network with sufficient internet speed: at least 2 Mbps download speed and 2 Mbps upload – test my internet speed.
- A browser with pop-up blocker disabled
Details on how to access and schedule your final examination through Examity®, as well as all other information and requirements, are posted to your course shell in Avenue to Learn (A2L).
Students are responsible for paying $50 ($36 US) Examity proctor fee. Please refer to your course shell for more details.

Before you begin:
- At least two weeks prior to your exam, register with Examity® and schedule your exam. Be sure to run the “Computer Requirements Check”
- Have access to a desktop computer or laptop (not a tablet)
- Have internet speed of at least 2Mbps upload and download
- Have a working internal or external webcam and microphone
- Have either a dry erase whiteboard (i.e. 9″ x 11″ or 11″ x 17″) with markers and eraser or have a paper shredder
Keys to a successful exam day:
- Run the “Computer Requirements Check” at least a day before the appointment
- Disable your pop-up blocker
- Click “connect to proctor” to begin
- Be alone in room
- Have a clear desk and workspace
- Have either a dry erase whiteboard (i.e. 9″ x 11″ or 11″ x 17″) with markers and eraser or have a paper shredder ?
- Be connected to a power source
- Your mobile phone and headphones must be out of reach
- Have your government issued ID ready
- Be prepared to perform a room scan
- You must be in the webcam view throughout the exam
Who is Examity®?
- Examity® is the leading online proctoring solution that gives students the flexibility to take exams remotely.
- It provides instructors, schools and students with the tools they need to prevent cheating and to preserve integrity
What can be done on the Examity Dashboard:
- Create a profile: Select your time zone, provide a contact phone number, upload a photo ID, and answer knowledge questions
- Schedule an exam: Select the day/time you are able to take your exam within the allowed window
- Reschedule/cancel: Reschedule or cancel your appointment
- Start exam: Click the start exam button to connect to the proctor to begin you exam session
Examity® system requirements are:
- A desktop computer or laptop with Windows or Mac operating system (tablets or smartphones are not compatible)
- Webcam and microphone (built-in or external)
- Connection to network with sufficient internet speed: at least 2 Mbps download speed and 2 Mbps upload – test my internet speed

How do I know if my system meets those requirements?

Who will be proctoring my exams?
- The team is comprised of strong communicators, technical troubleshooters and well-focused college-educated professionals.
Will I have the same proctor support every time I take my test?
- Examity® proctor support team are randomly assigned to exams.
- You may get the same proctor support more than once, but you may also have a different proctor support for each test
Does the process of connecting to my proctor support cut into my exam time?
- Connecting to proctor support, troubleshooting, and authentication does not count towards the exam duration
- Please allow for additional time to complete the connection/authentication.
- Examity recommends students to arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment. However during busy times, your wait to connect may be a little longer
What if something goes wrong?
- Examity® offers technical support all day, every day.
- If something goes wrong either before or during an exam, students can connect with our support team by email, by phone or by live chat
Apply to Graduate
Congratulations – you’ve completed your program and can apply to graduate!
After you complete all your required courses and your final grades have been posted in Mosaic, please apply to graduate using the steps below:
- Log into Mosaic Student Centre tile
- Ensure the spelling of your name and your address are correct
- Use the drop-down menu in the Academics section (defaulted to “other academic…”) to select “Apply for Graduation” and follow the steps.
Please apply for graduation AFTER the grade for your final course has been posted to Mosaic. The “Expected Graduation Term” is the term in which you began your last course. When applying to graduate it takes 6-8 weeks to be approved. Once approved it takes an additional 6-8 weeks to receive your Certificate, Diploma or Certificate of Professional Learning in the mail. Certificate of Completion will be emailed shortly after the approval process.
Graduates of Certificate and Diploma programs will be mailed a hardcopy credential. Certificate of Completion graduates will be issued a digital certificate. Once cleared to graduate, students can also access proof of program completion. Certificate and Diploma graduates can request an official transcript in Mosaic. Professional development and Certificate of Completion graduates can view their Course History through their Student Centre under My Academics.
Please note, we do our best to clear students to graduate as quickly as possible, however, during peak times, the process may be delayed.
Only Certificate, Diploma and Certificate of Professional Learning graduates are invited to attend graduation ceremonies.
Graduation Ceremony
Apply to Graduate deadline for the 2022 graduation is August 31, 2022.
