Transfer Credit

Transfer credits are courses completed at other accredited institutions or McMaster faculties (including McMaster University Continuing Education) that are assessed, and if granted, may be used towards McMaster University Continuing Education credentials. Transfer of credit can mean you do not have to repeat similar courses and you may graduate sooner.

These are the general conditions and submission requirements for transfer credits. Although, it may vary from program to program. Please fill out our Contact Us form if you would like more information about transfer credits related to your program.

General conditions (unless stated otherwise):

  • Courses must have an 80% overlap in content/curricula and a similar number of classroom or contact hours
  • Courses must have been taken within the last five years
  • Courses must have been taken from an accredited academic institution and listed on an official transcript with a grade
  • You must obtain a “C-“ or better to be eligible
  • You may only apply external transfer of credit to one Certificate or Diploma program
  • Advanced standing will not be granted until you register in a program
  • Transfer credits approved but not paid for within one year of approval may be rescinded
  • You will be charged a fee of $99 per course

Submission requirements (unless stated otherwise):

In order to assess your transfer credit request, please submit the following documents:

  • Name and course number of the external course(s) that you wish to be assessed for transfer of credit and the name and course number of the McMaster University Continuing Education course(s) that you would like credit for
  • An official transcript, demonstrating your completion of the course(s) and your final grade(s)
  • Applicants who have completed courses and/or degree programs at a post-secondary institution (PSI) outside of Canada must provide an ICAP Course-by-Course credential evaluation carried out by World Education Services Canada (WES)
  • Full course outline(s) (i.e. course description, course objectives, assessment criteria, textbook, weekly content covered)
  • Transfer of credit requests can be submitted electronically to the program-specific email address or by hard copy

Program-specific Requirements

Below are programs that have specific general conditions and submission requirements.

Diploma in Accounting 

  • Finance or accounting courses completed at other post-secondary educational institutions may be used for up to four course credits toward the Diploma in Accounting

Certificate in Advanced Accounting

  • Finance or accounting courses completed at other post-secondary educational institutions may be used for up to one course credit toward the Certificate in Advanced Accounting

The following general conditions apply:

  • Courses must have an 80% overlap in content/curricula and a similar number of classroom or contact hours
  • Courses must have been taken within the last five years
  • Courses must have been taken from an accredited academic institution and listed on an official transcript with a grade
  • You must obtain a “B-“ or better to be eligible
  • You may only apply external transfer of credit to one Certificate or Diploma program
  • Advanced standing will not be granted until you register in a program
  • Transfer credits approved but not paid for within six months of approval will be rescinded
  • Approved transfer credits may not appear on a student’s transcript until all other program requirements have been satisfied
  • You will be charged a fee of $99 per course

Associateship in Canadian Surety Bonding

Learners who have completed SCS 0933, SCS 0934 or SCS 0935 through the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies or the equivalent of ACC 925 Introductory Financial Accounting at other post-secondary educational institutions may apply for a maximum of two transfer course credits toward the Associateship in Canadian Surety Bonding Certificate.

Learners who have completed the equivalent coursework in excess of the permissible transfer credit maximum may apply for a course substitution. A course substitution may be permitted on a case-by-case basis, as approved by the program manager

Approved transfer credits not applied within six months of approval may be rescinded.

Business Administration

Transfer Credit from other institutions or McMaster Faculties:

  • You may transfer one course into the Business Administration Certificate Program
  • You may transfer up to two courses into the Business Administration Diploma Program

Multiple Concentrations within the Diploma in Business Administration at McMaster Continuing Education:

  • Students who have completed the Diploma in the Business Administration program with a concentration (or general diploma) and wish to pursue another credential within the program may do so only once. The courses may not be used beyond that. Students pursuing a second credential must take at least three unique courses in the new concentration area. Note: Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79 to pursue a second concentration

Essentials Courses to Diploma in Business Administration within McMaster Continuing Education:

  • Up to a maximum of 9 units of eligible 1-or 2-day Essentials courses may be transferred towards elective credit in the Business Administration Diploma Program. Students should notify the Business Administration Program Manager in writing of their intent to apply Essentials courses towards their Diploma. Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79 for a block of elective credit (up to 9 units)

Human Resources Management

Transfer Credit from other institutions or McMaster faculties:

  • A maximum of 3 equivalent courses taken at another institution may be transferred into this program, subject to approval by the Program Manager

Management Principles and Practices

Students may be eligible to transfer up to 3.0 units of study in the Management Principles and Practices Certificate program with the exception of previously completed courses from the Essentials program.

No transfer credits will be permitted for the Certificate of Professional Learning in Management Principles and Practices.

Transfer credits are NOT permitted for the Essentials courses.

Payroll

Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certificate

Option A:

  • Learners entering the Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certificate, who have completed Payroll Compliance Legislation, and/or Payroll Fundamentals 1, and/or Payroll Fundamentals 2, online directly/solely through the National Payroll Institute, may be eligible to apply the three courses to the Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certificate for a maximum of three transfer credits (9 units). NOTE: PCL, PF1 and/or PF2 completed through a college or university, do not qualify for this option and are not eligible for transfer credit

or

Option B:

  • Learners who have completed equivalent coursework in business communications or financial accounting may be eligible to apply for a maximum of one transfer credit (3 units)

Canadian Payroll Management Certificate

Option A:

  • Students pursuing the Certificate in Canadian Payroll Management program, who have completed Introduction to Payroll Management and/or Applied Payroll Management online directly/solely through the National Payroll Institute, may be eligible to apply both courses to the McMaster Certificate in Canadian Payroll Management for a maximum of two transfer credits (6 units). NOTE: Intro Payroll Management and/or Applied Payroll Management completed through a college or university do not qualify for this option and are not eligible for transfer credit

Option B:

  • Students who have completed equivalent coursework in introductory management accounting, business finance and accounting, compensation or organizational behaviour may be eligible to apply for a maximum of one transfer credit (3 units)

Transfer credit will be approved by the Program Associate based on the following criteria:

  • Courses must have an 80% overlap in content/curricula and a similar number of classroom or contact hours
  • Courses must have been taken within the last five years
  • Payroll Compliance Legislation, Payroll Fundamentals 1, Payroll Fundamentals 2, Intro to Payroll Management and/or Advanced Payroll Management must have been completed directly through the National Payroll Institute. Equivalent courses completed outside of the Institute will not be considered for transfer credit
  • Business courses must have been taken from an accredited academic institution and listed on an official transcript with a grade of “B-” or better

Project Management

Please note that transfer credits from other academic institutions, workshops or project management training/courses are NOT accepted.

Retirement Community Management

Please note that transfer credits are NOT accepted for the Retirement Community Management program.

  • Students may apply their completed Certificate of Professional Learning in Retirement Community Management towards the Business Administration program as a concentration in Retirement Community Management.
  • Students will be charged a one-time course transfer fee of $79 to pursue a Business Administration concentration in Retirement Community Management
  • Students are permitted to transfer courses to only two credentials within the University

Risk Management

Transfer credit between McMaster Continuing Education Programs:

  • Students who have completed the Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Professional Learning in Risk Management and wish to purse the Diploma in Business Administration may receive a block of 9 units of elective credit towards the Diploma
  • Students will be charged a one-time course transfer fee of $79 when choosing to pursue the Business Administration concentration program

Please note that external transfer credits are NOT accepted for the Risk Management program.

Applied Clinical Research

The Applied Clinical Research program does NOT accept transfer of credits from any program. Courses are NOT interchangeable between the Clinical Research Associate Certificate program (in person) and the Applied Clinical Research Certificate program (online).

Health Informatics

Transfer Credit from other Institutions or McMaster Faculties:
  • You may transfer up to 3 courses (9 units) into the Health Informatics Diploma program

Health Information Fundamentals 

Transfer Credit from other Institutions or McMaster Faculties:

  • You may transfer up to 1 course (2 units) into the Health Information Fundamentals Certificate program

Health and Social Service Skill Development

Upon enrolment in the program, a student may receive up to a maximum of 6 units of advanced credit for the Certificate option only. No transfer credits will be granted for the Certificate of Professional Learning.

Students currently enrolled in a Health and Social Service program plan prior to May 1, 2020 may transfer their courses to either the Health and Social Service Certificate of Professional Learning (3 courses, 9-units) or the Health Social Service Certificate (5 courses, 15-units) program plan. This transfer does not apply to students who have completed all requirements for a Health and Social Service program plan before May 1, 2020.

Professional Addiction Studies

Transfer Credit from other institutions or McMaster faculties:

  • You may transfer up to four courses (12 units) into the Professional Addiction Studies Diploma program
  • Please note that the Professional Addiction Studies Certificate program does not accept transfers

The Science of Cannabis

Supported by McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences as elective credits in select degree programs. Transfer credits cannot be used towards completion of the program.

Marketing

A student may use the same courses within McMaster Continuing Education to build a maximum of two credentials from the following:

  • Marketing Certificate
  • Marketing Diploma
  • Marketing Diploma with a concentration in Digital Marketing

Creative, Critical & Design Thinking

Please note that external transfers are NOT accepted for the Creative, Critical and Design Thinking program.

  • Students who have graduated from the Creative, Critical and Design Thinking Certificate of Professional Learning and wish to pursue the Business Administration diploma with a concentration in Creative, Critical, and Design Thinking are eligible to transfer their three completed courses to the diploma
  • Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79 when choosing to pursue the second program
  •  A course can be used no more than two times towards a McMaster University credential

Digital Marketing

The following general conditions apply:

  • You may transfer one course into the Digital Marketing Certificate Program
  • Courses must have an 80% overlap in content/curricula and a similar number of classroom or contact hours
  • Courses must have been taken within the last five years
  • Courses must have been taken from an accredited academic institution and listed on an official transcript with a grade
  • You must obtain a “C-“ or better to be eligible
  • You may only apply external transfer of credit to one Certificate or Diploma program
  • Advanced standing will not be granted until you register in a program
  • Transfer credits approved but not paid for within one year of approval may be rescinded
  • You will be charged a fee of $99 per course

OCAD U – Art & Design Programs

Web Design

Please note that external transfers are NOT accepted for the Web Design program.

Data Analytics

Transfer credits are only accepted for the Data Analytics Certificate program.

You may be eligible to receive a maximum of six units of transfer credit (two courses) from previous post-secondary studies that can be applied to the Data Analytics Certificate.

The following general conditions apply:

  • Courses must have an 80% overlap in content/curricula and a similar number of classroom or contact hours
  • Courses must have been taken within the last three years
  • Courses must have been taken from an accredited academic institution and listed on an official transcript with a grade
  • You may only apply external transfer of credit to one certificate or diploma program. An Approved transfer will not be granted until you start the program by enrolling into the first course
  • You may apply the completed Data Analytics Certificate of Professional Learning courses to the Data Analytics certificate
  • You may only transfer three units of credit (one course) from the Data Analytics certificate stream to the Data Science certificate
  • Transfer credit is not permitted for the Data Analytics Certificate of Professional Learning
  • Transfer credits approved but not paid for within one year of approval may be rescinded
  • You will be charged a fee of $99 per course

Data Science

Transfer credits are accepted for the Data Science Certificate program only.

You may be eligible to receive a maximum of six (6) units of transfer credit (2 courses) from previous post-secondary studies to be applied to the Data Science Certificate.

  • Courses must have an 80% overlap in content/curricula and a similar number of classroom or contact hours
  • Courses must have been taken within the last three years
  • Courses must have been taken from an accredited academic institution and listed on an official transcript with a grade
  • You may only apply external transfer of credit to one Certificate or Diploma program. An Approved transfer will not be granted until you start the program enrolling into the first course
  • You may apply the completed Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Professional Learning in Data Science courses to the Certificate in Data Science
  • You may only transfer three (3) units of credit (one course) from the Data Science stream to the certificate in Big Data Programming and Architecture
  • Transfer credit is not permitted for the Data Science Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Professional Learning
  • Transfer credits approved but not paid for within one year of approval may be rescinded
  • You will be charged a fee of $99 per course

Big Data Programming & Architecture

Transfer credits are accepted for the Big Data Programming and Architecture Certificate program only.

You may be eligible to receive a maximum of six (6) units of transfer credit (2 courses) from previous post-secondary studies to be applied to the Big Data Programming and Architecture Certificate.

The following general conditions apply:

  • Courses must have an 80% overlap in content/curricula and a similar number of classroom or contact hours
  • Courses must have been taken within the last three years
  • Courses must have been taken from an accredited academic institution and listed on an official transcript with a grade
  • You may only apply external transfer of credit to one Certificate or Diploma program. An Approved transfer will not be granted until you start the program enrolling into the first course
  • You may apply the completed Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Professional Learning in Big Data Programming and Architecture courses to the Certificate in Big Data Programming and Architecture
  • Transfer credit is not permitted for the Big Data Programming and Architecture Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Professional Learning
  • Transfer credits approved but not paid for within one year of approval may be rescinded
  • You will be charged a fee of $99 per course

Full-Stack Development

Three transfer credits (3 units) will be accepted into this program, with no more than one transfer credit in each content area (UX/UI Design, Front-end Development and Back-end Development). Students will need to have obtained a minimum grade of “C+” in each course transferred. The courses must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution in the last 5 years.

My OWN McMaster

Consideration for transfer credits will be made once the My OWN McMaster application is submitted to McMaster Continuing Education. Transfer credits are not assessed or “pre-approved” before an application is submitted.

  • McMaster courses may be applied towards two McMaster credentials only
  • Official transcripts must be received as part of the application in order to assess transfer credit options
  • A maximum of 30 units of transfer credit may be applied to the My OWN McMaster Pathway (McMaster Continuing Education portion)
  • Students are responsible to submit the required documentation and to remit any fees associated with a transfer credit approval as per the policies outlined below

Transfer credits towards a McMaster Continuing Education Diploma program:

McMaster Continuing Education’s current transfer credit policy for a Diploma program applies to students enrolled in the My OWN McMaster Pathway. The approval for transfer credits is based on the specific Diploma program’s policy. On this page you will find transfer credit information for our programs.

Transfer credit towards general electives:

Transfer credits may be approved, and applied, towards the general elective portion of the My OWN McMaster Pathway. Potential transfers are assessed as part of the application review process. For further details, please fill out our Contact Us form.
