Transfer credits are courses completed at other accredited institutions, McMaster faculties and McMaster University Continuing Education (MCE). Learners enrolled in a MCE academic program may apply for transfer credits. Approved transfer credits can mean you do not have to repeat similar courses, and you may graduate sooner.
You may be eligible to receive transfer credit from previous post-secondary studies for courses in your McMaster Continuing Education academic program. Transfer credits are permitted only for academic programs. Certificate of Completion programs do not accept transfer credits. You must be registered in a program for your transfer credit application to be assessed. A non-refundable transfer of credit assessment fee $99 per course will be applied.
Diploma to Diploma
Unless specified otherwise within the program, students who complete a McMaster University Continuing Education diploma and wish to pursue a second diploma may transfer up to twelve units of eligible credit from the first diploma to the second (one course is typically three units). Students may only transfer courses taken at McMaster University Continuing Education to a second diploma once. If the number of McMaster University Continuing Education courses being applied to the second diploma equals or exceeds the number of external transfer credits permitted in that program, additional external transfers will not be accepted.
Diploma to Certificate
Unless specified otherwise within the program, students who have completed a McMaster University Continuing Education diploma and wish to pursue a certificate in a different program may transfer up to six units of eligible credit to the certificate (one course is typically three units). Students may only transfer courses taken at McMaster University Continuing Education once. If the number of McMaster University Continuing Education courses being transferred to the certificate equals or exceeds the number of external transfer credits permitted, additional external transfers will not be accepted.

Students who complete an academic credit certificate of professional learning, certificate or diploma through McMaster Continuing Education may be eligible to transfer credits into an undergraduate degree program at McMaster. The number of units accepted is at the discretion of the Faculty and there are minimum grade requirements. To learn about admission requirements for McMaster degrees, please review the registrar’s website or contact a Student Services Professional through their live chat feature. Please note that transfer credits for degree studies will not be reviewed until an official offer of acceptance has been granted.
McMaster Continuing Education and the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences have partnered to offer a unique pathway for two undergraduate, 3-year degree programs. The MyOWN McMaster pathway allows you to work towards a university-level diploma, a Bachelor’s degree, and potentially a professional designation at the same time. This pathway can be completed fully online. Please note that History and Sociology are the only online degree options available for this pathway. For more information about this option, please review the MyOWN McMaster Pathway page.
