From Police Sergeant to HR Graduate: A Journey of Continuous Learning
Douglas (Doug) Pflug, a retired police sergeant with a 28-year career, recently graduated from McMaster Continuing Education’s Human Resources Management Program. His journey from law enforcement to human resources exemplifies the power of lifelong learning and adaptability.
Doug’s journey began in 1989 when he joined the Guelph Police Service. Over the years, he experienced varying leadership styles, which fueled his passion for continuous improvement. In 2017, he retired from the rank of police sergeant and began a journey into lifelong learning and professional leadership. Currently, Doug works with the Ontario Police College, coordinating and teaching the sergeant course and 911 supervisor course.
Seeking more education
Shortly after retiring as a police sergeant and exploring his next steps, Doug recognized a deficiency in his training. As a leader in both sworn and civilian law enforcement in Ontario, Doug sought to enhance his human resource management and leadership expertise. His goal was to add academic support and credibility to the courses he teaches.
Doug’s business case for further education was clear: to enhance his ability to lead and educate others effectively.
“I did a business case for my boss…If I’m teaching the future sergeants or middle managers of law enforcement, from a teaching perspective, we aren’t doing a good service to those folks because they need to have more than just my experience. They need to have emerging trends, best practices, and all of the new studies.”
Discovering McMaster Continuing Education
Aligning with the Ontario Police College’s goals, Doug’s search for affordable training and Canadian content led him to McMaster Continuing Education. As an accredited institution with a strong reputation, McMaster Continuing Education was deemed the ideal choice for obtaining the knowledge and skills Doug desired. Impressed by the program offerings, he enroled in the Foundations in Management of Human Resources certificate program. The program’s comprehensive curriculum included courses on labour relations, human resources management, and supervision.
Upon completing the 3-course certificate program, Doug gained valuable insights that postively impacted his instructional approach. He appreciated the multilevel presentation format within the program; readings, videos, and fresh perspectives enriched his learning experience and provided him with relevant and up-to-date content, which he now teaches in the sergeants and 911 supervisors courses at the Ontario Police College.
“All the information I received from the courses solidified and reaffirmed some of what I was doing. It gave me a great opportunity to open up my mind outside conventional law enforcement leadership and look at best-case practices, more specific to business. The course material was focused, encouraging you to think beyond your conventional thought processes and problem solve.”
Furthermore, Doug appreciated the instructors’ responsiveness, as they promptly addressed questions within 24 to 48 hours. He also enjoyed the dynamic open forum discussion format, facilitating engaging student conversations.
What’s next for Doug?
Doug’s commitment to continuous learning remains unwavering. His book, Iron Will 360 Leadership: Unlock 12 Emerging Trends for Forward Thinking Leaders, is set to be released in August. The content of this book draws insights from the Human Resources Management program coursework and frames essential leadership principles.
Doug’s journey from policing to teaching exemplifies resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of excellence.
“Education doesn’t start today and end tomorrow. It’s a lifelong process. What I learn through academics can help me improve as a human being. Lifelong learning and academic pursuits are imperative for personal and professional growth.”
