Through our Professional Addiction Studies program, you’ll learn to:
- Assess variables that lead to, and influence addiction, in order to support those living with and those affected by it
- Recognize knowledge limitations and scope of professional practice and the role of multidisciplinary care in relation to addiction
- Differentiate distinct theoretical and applied approaches pertaining to screening, assessment and treatment
- Understand the relationship between addiction and mental health, the complexities of working with individuals experiencing concurrent disorders, and the need for holistic care in situations where trauma is involved
- Use evidence-informed practice across treatments in order to support diverse populations and provide culturally-safe care
- Communicate effectively and appropriately, both verbally and in writing, within recognized professional and industry standards
- Translate theory to practice in the support of individuals, groups, families, and communities
- Act in a professional and ethical manner that reflects sensitivity to the nature of addiction and is in compliance with relevant laws
- Apply counselling and therapy-based treatments to be used in client-care

Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF)
The Diploma in Professional Addiction Studies is pre-approved by the CACCF as meeting the core educational requirements for the ICADC or CCAC certifications.
The Certificate in Professional Addiction Studies may be used on a course-by-course basis towards the specific skill and knowledge categories required for ICADC or CCAC certifications if you have previous related education that you are able to combine. Contact the CACCF for details.

NEW Associate Addiction Counsellor (AAC)
This entry-level certificate is intended for students, counsellors in training, or new graduates working towards completing their CCAC or ICADC certification.
To be an Associate Addiction Counsellor you must be attending, or have completed, education in a pre-approved program. The Professional Addiction Studies Certificate and Diploma are pre-approved programs.

In all cases, students register with McMaster Continuing Education at the course level (i.e. when registering in a course offered by McMaster Continuing Education). In most cases, students must also register at the program level with the association or institute.
