Why do people develop addictions? How can we help in the recovery process? This course explores how personality theories are useful in the assessment and treatment of addictions. By visiting the different personality theories we examine the notion of 'the whole person' from the biopsychosocial approach. We will examine eight different types of theories or 'glasses' through which addictive behaviour can be understood, including: Psychoanalytic & Neo-Analytic approaches, Biological theory, Behavioral theory, Social Learning theory, Trait perspectives, as well as Humanistic and Person-Situation Interactionist approaches. Students will learn counselling techniques specific to each theory.
