This course is designed to introduce students to the theoretical and practical aspects of working with young people who are experiencing difficulties associated with substance use. The goal of this course is to provide students with information and skills that will enable them to understand and address substance use issues unique to youth. We will begin by surveying adolescent development and substance use in the youth population. A study of theory will enable us to develop an understanding of the context in which youth use drugs and alcohol. Then, based on these understandings, we will proceed to learn 'best practices' that can be implemented to protect youth from the hazards of misusing drugs and alcohol.
