This course focuses on understanding the different types of health data available within healthcare systems. Understanding where to source the data is fundamental to the application of analytics strategies. Students will examine how data is collected, stored, mined, analyzed, and interpreted for purposes of reporting, quality, performance management, decision making, and research. A review of particular data sources and repositories within national and provincial health systems will be addressed.

This is a professional development; non-credit course. This course is offered as a virtual classroom with classes held, as per the scheduled day/time. Classes will be held online, using a combination of synchronous, real-time, instructor led sessions, supplemented with asynchronous activities. You should expect to attend class at the same time, each week, although not every session will be a full 3 hours of live instruction. Rather, classes will provide learners the opportunity to apply what has been covered by your course facilitator. Participants must bring a laptop to the class.

Dennis Cheung holds a Bachelor’s of Health Studies at York University and a Masters of Health Informatics at the University of Toronto. He has worked in a number of healthcare organizations ranging from hospitals, non-profits, to government and international organizations. Dennis is currently working at the Canadian Health Institute for Information (CIHI) as a Program Lead within the Architecture and Standards team with academic affiliations with the University of Toronto as adjunct facility for the IHPME department and an instructor with McMasters Centre for Continuing Education, Health Informatics program. Dennis currently teaches interoperability standards and data standards within the field of health informatics.
