Our behaviour is impacted by the assumptions, biases and stereotypes (positive and negative) that exist in our subconscious. We tend to believe that we are seeing everything in its complete form, however, it's not possible for us to see the world as it is. Instead, we see the world through the lens of our experiences, biases and various identity factors. As a result, the assumptions we hold shape the decisions that we make, but these decisions may be creating unequal outcomes for our employees. For leaders, it is important to be aware of how our experiences, influenced by intersecting factors, can influence the way in which we communicate, how we approach and resolve conflict and ultimately how we lead. This course presents an introduction to unconscious bias and provides strategies to challenge our assumptions, improve our policies and create an inclusive workplace.

Christine Costa is a seasoned Human Resources professional, Organizational Development consultant and facilitator with over 25 years of experience in various roles and industries (including financial services, technology, and higher education). She holds an MBA from McMaster University and is passionate about learning and development. She has spent her career coaching leaders and teams to help them reach their full potential. Christine is currently an entrepreneur and owner of “Christine Connects”, a professional training and facilitation practice that helps people create connections with their teams, themselves, and their environment.
Christine is an advocate for lifelong learning. She is currently pursuing a certificate of Psychology through Toronto Metropolitan University and has been an educator/teacher at the post-secondary and high school levels for over 10 years. She is currently an instructor with McMaster Continuing Education (in Human Resources and Essentials professional development) and a facilitator with Mohawk College Enterprise. In her spare time, she loves making music and spending time in nature.
